Eritrean National ID Card Application
For New Applicants
- 6 recent passport sized photos
- If both parents are Eritrean, then the full details of both parents (Name of parent, Name of Parent's father, Name of Parent's Grandfather as stated on their Eritrean ID, place of origin, Eritrean National ID number), if only one parent is Eritrean, then their full details
- Full name and contact information of a close relative of the applicant residing in Eritrea: who is able to answer any queries which may arise in relation with the application
Eritrean National ID Card Replacement Application
- 4 recent passport sized photos
- Previous Eritrean National ID number or copy of previous ID Card’
- Note: a court authorisation document should be presented for any changes of information e.g. Name, D.O.B.
Underage ID Cards for Children of Eritrean Parentage
Any child under the age of 18 of Eritrean parentage can be issued with an Under-Age ID card. This ID card will entitle the holder to travel to Eritrea without a visa. The ID card is valid as long as the passport is valid or until the child turns 18, whichever comes first.
Requirements:
- The Eritrean National ID card of one or both parents
- Current passport of the child
- Birth certificate of the child
- Two 3x3cm photos of the child
Temporary ID Cards
The temporary ID card is issued to Eritreans between the ages of 18 and 25 until such time that they get their Eritrean National ID card. The purpose of the temporary ID card is to enable young Eritreans to receive services. A holder of the temporary ID card does not require a visa to travel to Eritrea. The temporary ID card is valid for one year only.
Requirements:
- An application form for a new ID must be completed (See above)
- The applicant must be between 18 and 25 years of age
Criminal Record Check
Any person, Eritrean or non-Eritrean, who resided in Eritrea may make a request for a criminal record check.
Requirements:
- Eritrean National ID card number or Passport number
- Original fingerprints taken by a UK police force of all fingers present on both hands
- Two Passport size photos
- Contact details of a person in Eritrea who can act as an agent
Personal Official Documents
Any Eritrean national who wishes to acquire a copy of their personal official documents (School transcripts, Birth Certificates, Marriage Certificates, Death Certificates of family members, court documents, etc) must either present themselves in person to the issuing authority in Eritrea or appoint an agent on their behalf, as all such documents are only issued by the relevant authorities in Eritrea.
Eritrean Passport
Any Eritrean citizen regardless of age has the right to hold an Eritrean passport
Requirements: - Two passport sized photographs with the same specifications as the UK Passport and with a pure white background - An Eritrean National ID Card - If renewing a passport, the expired passport should be presented - If applying to replace a lost passport, the lost passport number should be presented - An applicant without an Eritrean National ID must first apply for and be issued with one prior to applying for a passportAuthentication of Documents
Official documents (Birth Certificates, Marriage Certificates, Death Certificates, etc) issued by the Eritrean or British authorities must first be legalised by the relevant authority of the issuing country before being presented to the Embassy.
Requirements:
- If the original document was issued by a UK authority and the holder wishes to use it in Eritrea, the document must be presented to the relevant section of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office for it to be legalised by placing a stamp and signature on the document. The document is then presented to the Eritrean Embassy for authentication.
- If the original document was issued by an Eritrean authority and the holder wishes to use it in the UK, the document must be presented to the relevant section of the Eritrean Foreign Office for it to be legalised by placing a stamp and signature on the document. The document is then presented to the Eritrean Embassy for authentication.
- For a document to be authenticated by the Embassy, the original document must be presented.
Power of Attorney
A power of attorney (POA) is a legal document giving one person (the agent) the power to act for another person (the principal). The agent can be a person who is in Eritrea or any other country where there is an Eritrean Embassy or Consulate. The letter which outlines the legal rights being deferred to the agent and which authorizes them to act on behalf of the applicant must be signed in the presence of an Eritrean Consul. The contents of the letter is the responsibility of the person giving power of attorney.
Requirements:
- Person wishing to give power of attorney must have an Eritrean National ID card.
- The full name of the agent
- The Eritrean ID number of the agent
- The date of birth of the agent
Proof of Residence in the UK for the purpose of shipping goods
Any Eritrean citizen residing abroad has a personal allowance which entitles them to send goods to family and friends which is intended for personal use or consumption and not for re-sale.
Requirements:
-The Sender must have an Eritrean ID and they must present their Eritrean ID number
- The full name and Eritrean ID number of the receiver
- The sender must present the shipping waybill and the list of items
-The sender must come in person to the Embassy to collect all necessary documentation
NB: The goods must be shipped from the country of residence
Marriage Certificate
The Embassy of the State of Eritrea (Consular Affairs) does not issue marriage certificates or any other certificate (Birth Certificate, Death Certificate, etc). An individual wishing to get married in Eritrea must present proof that they are not currently married.
Requirements:
- The individual must present their Eritrean National ID number
- The individual must present three witnesses who are willing to attest to the fact that the individual is not currently married. The witnesses are liable and must be in possession of their Eritrean National ID Card
- The Witnesses are liable for the veracity of their statement
Certificate of Existence (Certificate of Life)
If any Eritrean national has been asked by a legal entity in Eritrea to prove that they are still alive, they can present themselves to the Embassy to have a Certificate of Existence (Certificate of Life) issued. This certificate is only issued with the consent of the applicant.

Relief and Rehabilitation Tax
This is a voluntary tax (currently at 2% of net income) which is paid by Eritrean Nationals living abroad. The purpose of the tax as the name implies is to help with the regeneration and development of Eritrea. As things stand, Eritreans living in UK wishing to pay this tax will have to do so in Eritrea as the Embassy is not accepting payment.
Repatriation of The Remains of Deceased Eritreans
The following documents must be presented to the Embassy by anyone wishing to repatriate the remains of deceased Eritreans to Eritrea.
- Death Certificate
- The Death Certificate must be formally legalised by the Foreign , Commonwealth and Development office
- Letter from a suitably qualified medical practitioner certifying that the remains are free from any communicable disease
- A certificate of embalmment verifying that the remains have been prepared in accordance with international standards for the transportation of human remains
- If the cause of death is deemed to be due to unnatural causes, permission from the coroner has first to be given before the remains are removed from the UK
- The passport/ travel document of the deceased, if available
- The Eritrean National ID card of the deceased. In the case where the deceased does not have an Eritrean National ID or the ID cannot be located, three Eritrean nationals who can present their Eritrean National ID can verify that the deceased was an Eritrean by coming to the Embassy to sign a witness form.
Please note: The Embassy is not involved in the travel arrangements of the repatriation of the remains. It will be the funeral directors who will bring the relevant documents and not the family members of the deceased.
